Symptoms of Shingles

Because of the nature of the virus that causes shingles, shingles can affect many parts of the body. Although there are a variety of nerves that can be impacted by shingles, it is fairly easy to distinguish the symptoms of shingles from other conditions and disorders. The first symptom of shingles that normally arises is extreme sensitivity, pain or a combination of the two in a broad band on one side of the body. This symptom can present itself as a variety of sensations, including burning, itching, tingling or constant aching. You may also experience a deep, shooting pain, commonly described as a "lightning bolt" pain.

After the initial stage of irritation and pain begins, the next symptom of shingles that arises is a rash. This rash will appear approximately one to three days after the initial symptoms surface. The rash is normally composed of a combination of red bumps and blisters. The rash occurs in the same area as the pain, and will become filled with pus three to five days after their appearance. Approximately ten to twelve days after they first appear, they will pop and scab over. Over the next two to three weeks, the pain, irritation and rash will eventually disappear. The scabs within the rash will fall off, which may or may not lead to scarring of the affected area. To minimize the effects of shingles, it is important to consult the help of a doctor as soon as you notice the initial symptoms of shingles.
